A project by four young students has been selected for the national level competition to be held in Nagaland shortly.
Going national: The students with their exhibit.
Four students of Panchayat Union Middle School in Vembanpatti near Gandarvakottai in Pudukottai district have brought laurels to the institution through their science project on mini wind mill that has qualified for the national level contest. The project aimed at generating power through a mini wind mill set up in a speeding mini-autorickshaw.

The students, R. Kalaiarasi, R. Muthukumar and S. Lakshmanan all of Std. VIII and S. Venkatesan of Std. VI of the school worked on the project and presented their paper at the State-level competition at Nagercoil early this month. It has been selected for the national level competition to be held in Nagaland shortly.

“The principle of the mini wind mill is based on the functioning of the giant wind mills. While travelling by a speeding motor vehicle, one experiences strong currents of wind which is not put to use. Utilisation of this wind energy for generating power is the objective of the project. The hands of a fan fitted in the vehicle make uniform rotations or cycles. The fan is connected, in series circuit, to a set of five dynamos which together generate Direct Current (D.C.) of 1.5 volt,” says the guide, S. Geetha.

The current is stored in a battery and utilised for supplying energy to a few bulbs in the vehicle, according to the district training co-ordinator, A. Manikandan.

Step by step

The competition, sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology and the National Children’s Science Congress, was organised through the Tamil Nadu Science Fourm. “The project was chosen at the district-level Congress held in Pudukottai last month and was qualified for the State contest,” says Govindasamy, the district co-ordinator of the Tamil Nadu Science Forum.

The students were felicitated at a function in the school. The headmistress of the school, G. Ramajayam, the president of Parent Teacher Association, V. Srinivasan, the president of Village Education Committee, Chellakannu, and the Village Panchayat president, Thaiyalnayaki, appreciated the efforts taken by the students in preparing the project.
